GHG Workshop

Responding to climate change; Know your Greenhouse gas number

Responding to a changing Climate, Ruakituri Farmers are working to calculate their greenhouse gas emissions to meet the government regulations and start developing individual farm plans, that focus on driving that number into a neutral position.

It is important for the Guardians of the Ruakituri to do our part in contributing to the industry staying out of the Emissions Trading Scheme and having a system that recognises carbon sequestration on-farm and separates the price of methane from the price of carbon.

Our thanks to Beef & Lamb NZ and Shanna from AgFirst for delivering this learning opportunity locally.

Integrating Forestry Workshop

The recently held workshop facilitated by GroundTruth with the support of HBRC was a real eye-opener for most of the group present. There was definitely a negative bias against Pine trees but as a result of the presentation by JP and his team, we were able to begin to see how the strategic use of planting could be a real positive for the farming business financially, a win for biodiversity and for the land stability.

We were especially interested to hear about how the “Right Tree – Right Place’ initiative could support the introduction of plantings that could create a biodiversity corridor from the TeUrewera forest Reserve right through to Whakapunake Mounga.

The concept of supplement planting to protect and enhance existing small tree lots – especially those that are virgin natives generated strong possibilities and aligns with our vision of enhancing and protecting the environment for future generations.

One thing that was abundantly clear was how complex navigating the future compliance obligations around carbon emissions and gaining financial benefit from the ETS is. Having expert advice and guidance will be essential for the Guardians to navigate and make good decisions as custodians of the land.

LAWA Water Monitoring near Doughboy Bridge

The team at Land, Air, Water Aotearoa have been monitoring a selection of key aspects of the water in the Ruakituri river near the Doughboy Bridge. This data shows trends over 5 years so gives a good indication of the river health. You can use this link below to see their results:

Farm Environment Plan workshops

Juliet Chambers facilitating the learning to understanding the Beef & Lamb NZ planning tools

Having accurate information about what is happening on farm and planning for great environmental outcomes is important to all members of the Guardians of the Ruakituri. Our Ruakituri farmers have been working on developing their Farm Plan – starting with the Environment module, supported by Beef & Lamb NZ. The well-attended workshops have been held at the hall, with progress supported by the HBRC and a great team of knowledgeable experts lead by Juliet Chambers on behalf of Beef + Lamb NZ.

Our farmers are busy benchmarking the key areas of impact:

  • Soil
  • Water
  • Biodiversity

Establishing a clear detailed picture of data in each of these areas is the first step. There will always be more to do to maintain our pristine river! Understanding the tools and developing the plan for action is what will drive our committed farmers forward to ensure we meet our goals of protecting and enhancing the Ruakituri River for generations to come.
